I bought my new laptop!

I bought my new laptop!

Thank you everyone for your help, suggestions and feedback!

I bought an Ahtec Style X30 from Mingos (www.mingos.nl). They sell ahtec laptops with Ubuntu on it. It’s also possible to buy your laptop from Mingos without an OS at roughly the same price as Ahtec sells them. Currently this laptop costs 1124 euro at mingos without tax and without Ubuntu pre-installed. I was lucky and I got a little bit of a discount.

I choose this laptop because :

  • it fitted my requirements/wishes best
  • ahtec and mingos are the only Dutch companies I know that sell mobile laptops without windows
  • mingos has experience with Ubuntu on the X30

Here are the specifications of the laptop I bought :

Mingos LT-13 = Ahtec Style X30
2,16 KG
13″ , 1024×768
intel centrino
intel GMA 950 video
Intel T2500 Core Duo 2 ghz, 2 mb cache
intel ipw3945 a/b/g wireless
2 GB ram (DDR2 667 mhz)
80 GB Sata 5400 rpm harddrive
combo drive : cd-r/rw+dvd
2 years of guarantee (1 year pickup and return)

  3. It’s interesting that places like mingos and system76 (they offer awesome Ubuntu stickers) sell laptops with Ubuntu pre-installed, but decline to ad their models to the LaptopTesting Team’s wiki of known models. You’d think what amounts to free advertising, and quality information reguarding the usability of their system would be a win-win-win situation, for system76, Laptop Testing, and customers.

So I guess, don’t forget to add a report to the laptop wiki f

  4. Thanks guys!

    It works near perfectly!

I’m having some small but annoying issues with the video. I will investigate some more and post about this later. I’m blaming it on the xserver-xorg-intel driver. The driver is open source so I’m sure it will be fixed.

I’m still testing the laptop. Once Edgy is released I will put a review on the wiki.

Here’s the thread for my new laptop :

  6. You might want to try out dapper as well, since it is LTS. Do it for the good of the community! 🙂

  7. to jldugger :

Mingos is a new company. I told Mingos about the wiki and he reacted positively.

I’m still testing the laptop. Once Edgy is released I will put a review on the wiki. I will send them an email once I have done so.

  8. to jldugger :

Mingos told me that this laptop had some problems with Dapper. It sounded like the “mounting root filesystem” bug :

I might try the Dapper live-cd once I have some free time.

  14. You have your laptop some time now. Are your experiences different from these: http://www.winmag.nl/artikelen.php?action=OPEN&ACG=6&ID=1995

Because I’m thinking about buying this same laptop, but this review is burning this product to the ground. I’d like to hear what your experiences are.

    Kind regards,

  15. to Arjan :

Sorry for answering this late. I have been a bit busy.

If you are looking for a small laptop where you don’t have to pay for windows I can recommend it to you. AFAIK it’s the best laptop you can get for this purpose and this amount of money if you live in the Netherlands.

I can recommend mingos http://www.mingos.nl because they are the first company in the Netherlands which focus on selling Ubuntu laptops.

It’s true that the laptop gets warm but not painfully hot. It’s my first laptop so I can’t compare it with previous experiences. I suspect most small laptops of this generation get warm. I monitor my cpu temperature and it’s almost always between 51 and 57 degrees celcius.

IMHO there’s nothing wrong with the keyboard. The screen is very good.

I can work about 2.5 hours on battery if I’ve turned wireless off and if I’ve my screen brightness to the lowest (I work most of the time at that brightness).

I’m still very happy with my laptop.

Personally the only thing which annoys is me is the fact that I can’t rely on suspend and hibernate. But I hope this will get fixed.

If you have money to spend I’m sure there might be better options. I didn’t do research on more expensive options.

Thanx for your reply. Had ordered one of those laptops already. So I guess I’ll see for myself. It will be here in the first half of the next week they said. I’ve taken the fast CPU, 2Gig and small screen.

  18. There are not many people on this forum is it? Well, I have my laptop for a few months now, and I’m quite happy with it. The author of the article I asked about in response 14 must have had a very bad day, because the keyboard is fine, and it is not producing very much heat.
