In my humble opinion AIGLX is the best “short term” solution. In the “short term” future it will be just a matter of setting a gconf setting to make metacity (the default window manager for Gnome) work with AIGLX.

Will my NVidia card work?Not at the moment. The free ‘nv’ driver doesn’t support 3d acceleration, and the proprietary driver doesn’t have the necessary extentions.

NVidia has told us that they will be adding support for GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap once the extension has finalized, and we might see in one of their upcoming releases.
